This month, as we look ahead through the Fall and into the Holidays, we thought it would be an appropriate time to use this space to discuss an area of community involvement that we take pride in. Resource Management Partners is an active supporter of Life’s WORC – an organization providing both residence and outreach services to hundreds of developmentally challenged people across Long Island.
The organization's goal is to provide as much normalcy and dignity as possible to its residents, who range from mildly to profoundly challenged. The residents each face life challenges ranging from autism and cerebral palsy to multiple sclerosis and others. The typical resident is beyond the capacity of family members' ability to care for them. Life’s WORC offers an alternative to institutional settings such as nursing homes.
Each of the 32 homes (and growing!) is staffed by the most amazing group of people you will ever meet. The homes are located in residential neighborhoods and are modified to accommodate the needs of 6-8 residents. While funding from New York State and other sources provides for most of the basic needs for the homes and residents, it is the Make a Wish program that provides the human touch beyond that – one resident at a time.
The Wish List includes items such as beds for special needs, Dynavox’s which give individuals with significant speech difficulties the ability to communicate more easily, and stipends which allow higher-functioning individuals to receive a modest paycheck and feel a sense of pride for performing simple work.
Each year, Life’s WORC holds its Gala Event in December to raise money to provide for many of the Wish List items. As part of the event, we publish a book that allows people to make a donation – as little as $75 – to post a Holiday message or simply a greeting. I hope you will join us by clicking HERE to participate in this time of giving. Thank you for indulging us and enjoy a successful end to 2006. .
